Nottinghill Reading - An everything for £5 store!

On Saturday I ventured into Reading on the bus to meet a friend for coffee!

After we were finished at the lovely Boswell's café (I would highly recommend their Skinny Caramel Latte's!) We made our way through the Christmas shoppers in the Broad Street Mall to the Nottinghill store.

Sushi Birthday Cake!

So around mid-October was my birthday! Which meant Birthday cake! Usually at work people either make or bring in cake to share with the office. I decided to make mine, because I love making cakes.

Swan Lake Birthday Cake

I recently had a request for a birthday cake from a co-worker. She'd seen a picture of a duck pond cake that she liked (That co-incidentally my youngest sister had made.) I knew roughly how the duck pond cake had been made but not what kind of cake it actually was, just that it had been made with green jelly and had real cream and coconut in the frosting, something that I have never tried before and as this was the first time I'd made a cake that work friends would be eating, I wanted to get it right first time and I didn't want it to be an exact copy of my sisters!

Back again!

Hello!

Apologies for the hiatus again - I unfortunately lost my job back in March, but have now started a new one, and moved house! Now that everything is for the most part back to normal, I can get back to posting some fun projects! So what do I have planned for future updates? Well there will be a few! Please note the dates for the below are dependant on time and materials!

  • - Bunny/Kitty Scarf (Coming September)
  • - Altering a waist band on a skirt (Coming September/October)
  • - Birthday Cupcakes (Coming October)
  • - Birthday Cake (Coming Mid-October)

  • In keeping with updates, I do have one update for you, I have recently made a swan lake cake which I will post the guide too after this! If you do have any suggestions for something you'd like to see a guide too, do let me know and I'll see what I can do!

    Recipe: Oaty Fruit Bake

Look at me on a roll! Today's recipe is for Oaty Fruit bakes, these are great for lunch boxes, or a snack during the day! They are simple and quick to make too.

    Oaty Fruit Bake

    Ingredients

    1 Cup Oats
    1 Cup Dark Brown Sugar
    1 Cup Self Raising Flour
    1 Cup Dried mixed fruit
    40g Margarine
    2TBS Golden Syrup
    1TSP Bicarbonate of Soda
    Milk to bind

    Method

    * Pre-heat your oven to 200c (I am using a fan oven, so please adjust accordingly)
    * Grease and line a baking tray with some grease proof paper
    * In a bowl combine the margarine and dark brown sugar until it resembles bread crumbs
    * Add the flour, bicarbonate of soda and dried fruit

    * Mix together until you have something that resembles muesli

    * Add the treacle to the dry ingredients and stir through until it starts to form small lumps

    * Gradually pour in some milk, you only need enough to combine the mixture, when you have something that looks like a wet version of cookie dough you are there! If it looks more like runny cake mix, add a little more flour till it brings you back to wet cookie dough

    * Empty the cookie mix onto the baking sheet and spread out evenly

    * Put into the oven and bake for 10 mins
    * After ten minutes, check the bake, they should be a dark golden colour,be soft when touched and look very cakey. If they aren't at this stage leave them in the oven another five minutes and check again

    * When cooked remove from the oven and leave to 'set' in the baking tray for ten minutes
    * Remove from the baking tray and slice into individual cookies. You may find they stick to the grease proof paper, if they do, use a spatula to remove them from the paper and transfer them to a cooling rack

    * And you're finished! Enjoy!
